Roméo et Juliette

Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette (co-production of the CNT Rijeka and Ravenna Manifestazioni – Teatro Alighieri, 2019) was staged and choreographed as a ”dance macabre”, or rather an “opera macabre”. Juliet and Romeo’s death is introduced already during the overture, the rest of the performance then being about their pre-destined exile from this world. The costumes were all black and the set resembled a cage that got elevated only to open an endlessly blue sky in the final bars of this heartbreaking opera.
